Wait, that doesn't count?

She might as well have thrown the mic at me.

The obvious aha was so big in my head:

Rest and leisure are not the same.

“Wait, what?”

Last weekend at a coaching symposium the speaker was dropping serious knowledge on our nervous systems.

And what rest actually looks like.

I’m a big fan of movement and nature.

I want to be outside DOING the thing and getting after it.
(Mountain biking, hiking, snowboarding, paddleboarding…)

Her talk helped me realize that while those are excellent for my health and wellbeing…

They are not rest.

Those are leisure activities. Hobbies.

Ok, so I mostly knew that.

But it was a good reminder that I need to prioritize actual rest, too.

I’ve meditated [almost] daily for a few years now. Which has been life-changing.

But lately, I’ve been feeling a need for more calm.

(That you calling, mid-40s?)

And her talk solidified why.

To go inward. Slow down. Contemplate.

And, for me, probably more sitting and staring at nature (not flying through it).

We’re constantly surrounded by stimulus.

Notifications popping up like anxious kernels on our phones, computers, cars – everywhere.

So as a new season sets in, it feels like good timing.

To let our minds wander.
Our bodies recover.
To take deep, intentional breaths.

Even if it’s only 5 minutes.

Or 2.

Sometimes the thing you need is the simplest of them all.

Breathe.

Lie down.

Rest.

Maura

PS – Are you better at fitting in true rest? I’d love to know your fave ways. Or, thoughts on how you’re going to start trying to sneak it in.

PPS – 80s girl here. So of course my mid-40s are calling from a Zack Morris phone.

Hi friends, I'm back! And I'm waving hello to those of you who joined during my hiatus and are getting your first Sketching Adventures email! Hummingbird. That was my brain’s default speed this summer. Fluttering faster than I could think.Zipping around on a sugar high. Blurring my reality. Between the constant evolution of AI, an ever-changing world, and a life that’s packed full of goodness, it sometimes feels hard to keep up. Not to mention all the things we can blindly click on these...

There’s no one way. The amount of times I’ve said that — that we’ve all said that — infinite, right? For me, it often comes up around health, wellness, business or mindset. There’s no one way… to eat healthy (100% paleo is not for me) to get fit (burpees on the daily are a big no thank you) to do business (social media is my frenemy, referrals are my bestie) to be creative (hello, silly sketches) to live (relationships + nature + adventure + time = me) to be ready (moving on from perfection,...

turtle graphic and words embrace your pace

Playing outside, client projects, and an amazing 2.5-week British Columbia road trip. That sums up my summer so far. How about you? Now that I'm back, I wanted to share this with you ASAP! This Monday, August 25th, 5:30pm MT / 7:30pm ET, I'm joining my friend Kate Kendall for a live conversation about authenticity, career pivots, and the magic of the messy middle. I’ve admired Kate’s work since discovering her empowering, insightful yoga classes on Gaia.com back in 2014. These days, our...
